Mozart described his Quintet, K. 452 as “the best thing I have ever written”, in a letter to his father from 1784. It explores the unusual combination of fortepiano and wind quartet (oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn) and resembles a concerto both in its layout and interplay between the instruments. In 1796 the young Ludwig van Beethoven contributed another work for this unusual combination (op. 16), modeled on Mozart’s quintet. The present performances on period instruments by the Cambini Winds and Penelope Crawford reveal the richness of this unusual genre just as the composers imagined.
