In 1820 Schubert began to create a new voice in the realm of the string quartet, with the unfinished Quartettsatz (Quartet movement) in C minor, D. 703. Just eight years later he completed his chamber masterpiece: the sublime String Quintet in C major, D. 956. Within six weeks of offering the work to a publisher he was dead. This CD inaugurates a four-volume survey of Schubert’s later quartets and quintet, performed by the Skálholt Quartet of Iceland, led by legendary Dutch violinist, Jaap Schröder.
