Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832) was one of the most important formative influences on his young protégé, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), exemplified by his handing the young prodigy the responsibility for reviving Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in 1829 – a watershed event. Both Zelter and Mendelssohn added greatly to the Lieder repertoire, setting texts by the great poets of the day. Soprano Andrea Folan and fortepianist Tom Beghin provide a comprehensive view of their world of song.
