In 1820 Schubert began to create a new voice in the realm of the string quartet, with the
unfinished Quartettsatz (Quartet movement) in C minor, D. 703. Just eight years later
he completed his chamber masterpiece: the sublime String Quintet in C major, D. 956.
Within six weeks of offering the work to a publisher he was dead. This CD inaugurates a
four-volume survey of Schubert’s later quartets and quintet, performed by the Skálholt
Quartet of Iceland, led by legendary Dutch violinist, Jaap Schröder. |

Magnificat - Warren Stewart (Artistic Director) |
|
|
Following on our complete recording of Chiara Margarita Cozzolani’s 1650 Salmi a Otto Voci
Concertati (MO 0401), the ensemble Magnificat, directed by Warren Stewart, now presents her 1642
Concerti Sacri, the second of four publications (1640, 1642, 1648 & 1650), only two of which survive
in their entirety. Donna Chiara (1602 - c.1677) was one of the finest Italian composers of the generation
after Monteverdi. She ultimately became Mother Superior of the convent of S. Radegonda in Milan,
and famous throughout Italy. These performances present her music as she heard it: performed entirely
by women’s voices. |

Ralf Yusuf Gawlick - Kinderkreuzzug, Op.13 |
|
|
Knabenchor der Chorakademie Dortmund, Youth pro Musica, Treble Chorus of New England and Ensemble Glockenspiel |
|
|
Ralf Gawlick’s 'Kinderkreuzzug', a cantata for children’s chorus and chamber ensemble, is a work at once eloquent and powerful. It casts an extraordinary spell over the listener, amplifying the poignant and tragic text of Bertolt Brecht in a raw and visceral way. The spectacle of three youth choirs, both individually and in combination, as well as their accompaniment by the sparest of instrumental combinations, powerfully conveys the subject of “war, and the pity of war” in the words of Wilfred Owen, the poet for Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, the work that Ralf Gawlick’s piece most directly evokes. |

George Frideric Handel - Israel in Egypt, HWV 54 |
|
|
Orchestra and Choir of Trinity Wall Street - Julian Wachner, Conductor |
|
|
Israel in Egypt, Handel’s grand choral
oratorio experiment, was a failure when
first presented in London in 1739, yet
it may well be the greatest work
Handel ever composed. In 1756 the
composer literally re-thought the work,
substituting an entirely new first part.
This recording presents both versions:
Handel’s 1756 revision and the original
part 1 from 1739. Julian Wachner
makes his debut with the famous
choir and baroque orchestra of
Trinity Wall Street, in New York. |

Orchestra and Choir of Trinity Wall Street - Julian Wachner, Conductor |

Bach’s seven motets represent the continuation of a long and distinguished tradition of
vocal composition, dating back to the late medieval works of Dufay. Bach’s motets
represent the apogee of the genre and are his most demanding vocal works. The present
recording is the first in a new series with the musical forces of Trinity Wall Street,
conducted by Julian Wachner. It is released to commemorate the 10th anniversary
of September 11, 2001. |

The Six French Suites, BWV 812-817;
Little Preludes, BWV 924-943 |

|
Peter Watchorn (harpsichord) |
|
|
Bach’s six French Suites, BWV 812-817 are among the composer’s most satisfyingly melodious works for
keyboard. Less demanding than the great English Suites and Partitas, they represent Bach at his most
tuneful and galant, giving the lie to any notion that his music was always severe in its contrapuntal
demands, or lacking in melodic sensuousness. Completing this set are the short preludes from the
Clavierbüchlein for Wilhelm Friedemann, composed to develop the musical skills of Bach’s children. |

Magnificat - Warren Stewart (Artistic Director) |

Over the last twenty years, performances and scholarship have given us some idea of
the remarkable musical world of cloistered nuns in early modern Italy. Magnificat’s
recording of the complete 1650 publication by one such nun, Chiara Margarita
Cozzolani (1602-c.1677), testifies to both her own musical creativity and to the high
skills of the musicians in her Benedictine house of Santa Radegonda in Milan. |

Beethoven: The Last Piano Sonatas |
|
|
Penelope Crawford, fortepiano |
|
|
Beethoven’s piano sonatas op. 109-111 represent the composer’s farewell to a genre that was
transformed by his thirty-two contributions to it, culminating in the otherworldly C minor
sonata, op. 111. Fortepianist Penelope Crawford presents these three profound works with
unique insight and sympathy, enhanced by her use of a magnificent original fortepiano,
similar to one owned by Beethoven, by the great Viennese maker, Conrad Graf. |

Douglas Worthen (flute)

Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755) was the most successful freelance composer in France
during the first half of the 18th century, with over a hundred published opuses appearing
during his lifetime. The “six sonates” for flute and obbligato harpsichord, op. 91, are among
the most celebrated works to appear in Paris in the wake of Rameau’s 1741 publication of his
Pièces de claveçin en concerts. Douglas Worthen and Ursula Dütschler provide exemplary
performances of these little-known masterworks. |

Complete Music For Two Fortepianos |

Mozart’s output for two separate

composed in the wake of the composer’s
acquaintance with the Bach and Handel
aficionado, Baron Gottfried van

of the Larghetto & Allegro in E flat
major supplements these works to

repertoire in exciting performances

THE YOUNG FELIX MENDELSSOHN |
|
|
The Atlantis Ensemble -
Jaap Schröder |
|
|
Conventional wisdom has it that Felix Mendelssohn came into his own as a composer at the age of
16 in 1825, with the composition of his string Octet and the Overture to “A Midsummer Night’s
Dream”. This release, the final volume of the Atlantis Ensemble’s Mendelssohn 2009 project, reveals
the lesser-known riches among the works written by young Felix in the years immediately preceding,
1822-1824. Jaap Schröder and his colleagues take us directly into the prosperous Mendelssohn
household of the 1820s, a remarkable environment that nurtured young Felix, the prodigy. |

Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832) was one of the most important formative influences on
his young protégé, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), exemplified by his handing the young
prodigy the responsibility for reviving Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in 1829 – a watershed
event. Both Zelter and Mendelssohn added greatly to the Lieder repertoire, setting texts by
the great poets of the day. Soprano Andrea Folan and fortepianist Tom Beghin provide a
comprehensive view of their world of song. |

Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet, like
its companion work, the Piano Quintet,
was created in 1842, an astonishingly
productive year devoted to chamber

than its sister-work, the quartet
combines transparency with Romantic
passion and emotional intensity. The
CD is completed with the rarely heard

Beethoven arrived in Vienna in 1792 to undertake studies with Joseph Haydn. His first published

and dramatic aesthetic that Beethoven would further develop during the next thirty-five years
of his residency in Vienna. That trio is presented here along with Beethoven’s own piano trio
arrangement of his Second Symphony in D major, Op. 36 and the Allegretto in B-flat major, WoO
39. The Atlantis Trio provides masterful interpretations on instruments of Beethoven’s period. |
