Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Book II |
|
|
Peter Watchorn (pedal harpsichord) |
|
|
By the 1740s, J. S. Bach was engaged in the task of bringing his life’s work to some kind of final
form. By 1742 he had compiled a second collection of preludes and fugues in all the possible major
and minor keys, which he named Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Part II, complementing his
original set from twenty years earlier. Peter Watchorn presents this monumental work using a
German-style harpsichord and pedal harpsichord in performances of unrivalled depth and power |

Sonatas for flute and harpsichord |
|
|
Douglas Worthen (flute)
Ursula Dütschler (harpsichord) |
|
|
Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755) was the most successful freelance composer in France
during the first half of the 18th century, with over a hundred published opuses appearing
during his lifetime. The “six sonates” for flute and obbligato harpsichord, op. 91, are among
the most celebrated works to appear in Paris in the wake of Rameau’s 1741 publication of his
Pièces de claveçin en concerts. Douglas Worthen and Ursula Dütschler provide exemplary
performances of these little-known masterworks. |

Magnificat - Warren Stewart (Artistic Director) |
|
|
Over the last twenty years, performances and scholarship have given us some idea of
the remarkable musical world of cloistered nuns in early modern Italy. Magnificat’s
recording of the complete 1650 publication by one such nun, Chiara Margarita
Cozzolani (1602-c.1677), testifies to both her own musical creativity and to the high
skills of the musicians in her Benedictine house of Santa Radegonda in Milan. |

Inventions & Sinfonias - BWV 772-801 |

Peter Watchorn (harpsichord) |

The next volume in Peter Watchorn's complete survey of the harpsichord music of Johann Sebastian Bach is devoted to the Inventions & Sinfonias, BWV 772-801, a set of thirty short contrapuntal pieces written for Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann. A textbook demonstration of Bach's preferred "cantabile" style, this recording also features the "Bach" tuning, as proposed by Bradley Lehman, and a magnificent German-style harpsichord by Australian master builder, Alastair McAllister. |
