Johann Sebastian Bach
The Six French Suites, BWV 812-817; Little Preludes, BWV 924-943
Peter Watchorn (harpsichord)
Bach’s six French Suites, BWV 812-817 are among the composer’s most satisfyingly melodious works for keyboard. Less demanding than the great English Suites and Partitas, they represent Bach at his most tuneful and galant, giving the lie to any notion that his music was always severe in its contrapuntal demands, or lacking in melodic sensuousness. Completing this set are the short preludes from the Clavierbüchlein for Wilhelm Friedemann, composed to develop the musical skills of Bach’s children.

Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Book II

Peter Watchorn (pedal harpsichord)

By 1742 he had compiled a second collection of preludes and fugues in all the possible major and minor keys, which he named Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Part II, complementing his original set from twenty years earlier. Peter Watchorn presents this monumental work using a German-style harpsichord and pedal harpsichord in performances of unrivalled depth and power

Bach: Works for Harpsichord

The harpsichord compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach represent one of the pinnacles of Western music. Bach composed for the harpsichord throughout his long career and the surviving works clearly show his development over a period of nearly fifty years. Peter Watchorn has spent over thirty years specializing in this music, and here presents all of the master's works for harpsichord and pedal harpsichord, beginning with The Well-Tempered Clavier and the six English Suites. Using a variety of harpsichords by the leading builders of the present day, Peter Watchorn brings to this project the insights and knowledge gained by many years of study with Isolde Ahlgrimm, the great Viennese harpsichordist, as well as his own experience as a harpsichord builder of note. The series also features the newly discovered "Bach" tuning, deciphered by Bradley Lehman from the title page of the first 1722 collection of preludes and fugues
