Ludwig van Beethoven |
|
|
Piano Trio, Op. 1, No. 3; Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36
(arranged by Beethoven for fortepiano trio) |
|
|
The Atlantis Trio - Penelope Crawford (fortepiano), Jaap Schröder (violin), Enid Sutherland (cello) |
|
|
Beethoven arrived in Vienna in 1792 to undertake studies with Joseph Haydn. His first published
works were a set of three piano trios, Opus 1, of which the third, in C minor revealed the new
and dramatic aesthetic that Beethoven would further develop during the next thirty-five years
of his residency in Vienna. That trio is presented here along with Beethoven’s own piano trio
arrangement of his Second Symphony in D major, Op. 36 and the Allegretto in B-flat major, WoO
39. The Atlantis Trio provides masterful interpretations on instruments of Beethoven’s period. |

The Atlantis Trio
|
|

The Atlantis Trio,
comprising Jaap Schröder (violin), Penelope Crawford
(fortepiano) and Enid Sutherland (cello), specializes in
the classical and romantic piano trio literature on
period instruments. It has performed widely throughout
North America, including concerts at the Smithsonian’s
and the Westfield Center’s co-sponsored festival
Schubert’s Piano Music in Washington D. C., the
Haydn Festival in Amherst, Massachusetts, the Helicon
series in New York City, the Schubert Club in St. Paul,
Minnesota, as well as numerous live broadcasts on
National Public Radio. For Musica Omnia the
Atlantis Trio and the augmented Atlantis Ensemble are
engaged in a major project documenting the great
Romantic chamber works for piano and strings, including
all the major works in this genre by Schumann, Schubert,
Thalberg, Hummel, Clara Schumann & Fanny Mendelssohn.
The Atlantis Trio and Atlantis Ensemble are also involved in a
series of recordings of the complete chamber works for piano and
strings by Felix Mendelssohn, in honour of that composer’s upcoming
bicentennial in 2009. |

FELIX MENDELSSOHN |

THE YOUNG FELIX MENDELSSOHN |
|
|
The Atlantis Ensemble -
Jaap Schröder |
|
|
Conventional wisdom has it that Felix Mendelssohn came into his own as a composer at the age of
16 in 1825, with the composition of his string Octet and the Overture to “A Midsummer Night’s
Dream”. This release, the final volume of the Atlantis Ensemble’s Mendelssohn 2009 project, reveals
the lesser-known riches among the works written by young Felix in the years immediately preceding,
1822-1824. Jaap Schröder and his colleagues take us directly into the prosperous Mendelssohn
household of the 1820s, a remarkable environment that nurtured young Felix, the prodigy. |

Schubert’s two piano trios are among the crowning achievements of early 19th century
chamber music. They date from the final two years of the composer’s short life and
inspired similar compositions for the same ensemble by Mendelssohn and Schumann.

provides benchmark performances on instruments of the period. |
