Winterreise, D.911 |
Max van Egmond (baritone) & Penelope Crawford (fortepiano) |
This is, by general consent, the greatest of all Lieder cycles, and the second that Schubert based on Müller’s poems. Max van Egmond and Penelope Crawford here present a profoundly moving performance, enhanced by the use of an original 1835 fortepiano by the great Viennese maker, Conrad Graf. |

Franz Schubert - Piano Trios, Op. 99 & 100 |
The Atlantis Ensemble - Penelope Crawford (fortepiano), Jaap Schröder (violin), Enid Sutherland (cello) |
Schubert’s two piano trios are among the crowning achievements of early 19th century
chamber music. They date from the final two years of the composer’s short life and
inspired similar compositions for the same ensemble by Mendelssohn and Schumann.
In this newly re-mastered release of their celebrated recording, the Atlantis Trio
provides benchmark performances on instruments of the period. |

Skálholt String Quartet
Jaap Schröder, Rut Ingólfsdóttir, violins
Svava Bernharðsdóttir, viola

*Bruno Cocset, 2nd cello |

In 1820 Schubert began to create a new voice in the realm of the string quartet, with the
unfinished Quartettsatz (Quartet movement) in C minor, D. 703. Just eight years later
he completed his chamber masterpiece: the sublime String Quintet in C major, D. 956.
Within six weeks of offering the work to a publisher he was dead. This CD inaugurates a
four-volume survey of Schubert’s later quartets and quintet, performed by the Skálholt
Quartet of Iceland, led by legendary Dutch violinist, Jaap Schröder. |
